AOL Member Profile Maker

This is the place to spruce up your AOL Profile.  Add fantastic colors, different fonts and sizes, hyperlinks, and lots of other cool stuff!  It takes about 15 minutes, but the end result is really neat. You can email me if you any questions at aolprofile@isaleh.com. Please visit my web page too, in fact you can do it right now and your browser will open it in a new window so you can continue looking at this page. Click Here.  These directions were lasted updated 11/09/02 , so they should be up-to-date with the current AOL format.

Now lets get started.  First of all, check what version of AOL you have.  The color profiles only work with AOL 3.0 or greater.  Also, I have AOL 7.0, so I have geared all these instructions towards that platform.  Those of you with other versions of AOL might have some problems, so just try and explore your way through.

A special note to CompuServe users: I’m really sorry, but CS does not support colorful profiles, so you’re out of luck.  If you want to do something about it try e-mailing CompuServe and complaining about it, maybe you’ll have some luck.

Anyway, on with the show.  First off, log on and get onto AOL.  Go to keyword: My Profile (you can do this by pressing Ctrl+K and then typing in My Profile).  On the next screen, click on the "My Profile" button at the top of the screen.   Now you are ready for some color.

Background Color

If you want a color background in your profile, highlight the HTML code below, copy it, and paste it into the "Your Name" line of your profile (it should be the very first thing in the line).

< body . bgcolor=#000000>

OK, now you have to fill in what color you want.  Click here to go to a chart of over 140 colors (this link should open in a new window so that you can still see this site).  Once you have reached that site, find the code of the color your want, and highlight and copy it.  Now go back to your profile and delete the #000000 that is there and replace it with the code color you selected on the other page.

Confused? Here's an example.  I wanted my profile to have a light blue background, so I went to the Color Code chart and chose the code #0099ff.  Then I put that code in my HTML tag, and this is what I got:

< body . bgcolor=#0099ff>

It worked for me, so there is no reason it shouldn't work for you.  Remember, this HTML code should be the very first thing in your profile (Don't worry.  If you do this correctly, all that funky HTML that you are typing in won't show up in your profile).

----

Text Color

This HTML tag makes your text a certain color.  You do the same procedure here as you did above.  First, copy and paste the following tag into the "Your Name" line of your profile (it should be immediately after the HTML code you just did above):

< font . color=#xxxxxx>

OK, now.  In this HTML cdoe g, xxxxxx represents the Color code that you can choose. Again, go to the my color chart page, find the code of the color your want, and replace the xxxxxx with the code that you want.

The text in my profile is black, the default color, so I didn't have to worry about this HTML tag.  However, if you want your text to be yellow or maroony green, than this HTML code is all you.

-----

Fonts

Got the hang of it now?  It's easy, right?  OK, you can use the next tag to make your text a different font.  Like always, first highlight and paste the below HTML tag into the "Your name" line of the profile (right after the other 2 tags you have):

< font . face=xxxxxx>

In this HTML tag, xxxxxx represents the name of the font you want.  Now, I don't have a list of fonts for you, but I'm sure you know what the names of the ones you like are, so use those.  Note: Make sure you get the full name, like for Comic Sans (the font on this page) I had to put Comic Sans MS, (notice the MS I had to put in to get it to work).  If you want an example, here's what the font HTML tag in my profile looks like:

< font . face="Comic Sans MS">

-----

Font Sizes

This next HTML tag is only if you want a really goofy profile. I would suggest sticking with the normal size font and not have to worry about using this tag. If you use too many tags, you'll run out of space. But anyways...to assign a font size to a string of text, use the following tag.

< font . ptsize=xx>

xx represents the point size of the font used (i.e., The point size of this web page's font is 14).

My font size was the normal font size (12) so I didn't have to put in a font tag

-----

Text Highlight

If you would like to highlight your text like I am doing here, use the following code

< font . color=#xxxxxx back=#xxxxxx>

The first xxxxxx is the color that the text will be
The second xxxxxx is the color that the highlight will be.

For example, if you want your text to be highlighted in blue and yellow like the one above, use this code:

< font . color=#3333ff back=#ffff33>

(#3333ff is the color code for blue, and #ffff33 is the color code for yellow)

Again click here for a list of all the color codes.

Mixing Code

OK, this gets complicated now, so if you're like me, you don't pay attention here.  But if you're really advanced, than you can try it out.  Let's say that in your profile, you want your Member Name Field to be in red and in large font while you want your interests to be a smaller font and in blue.  Well, you can achieve this by mixing tags.  One you insert a color tag, for example, your text stays that color until you insert a tag for a different color.  Here's an example:  I will insert two tags into my profile like so:

< font . face="Pencil" ptsize=14 color=#810541>My name is Imran.< font . face="Arial" ptsize=12 color=#000000>I wear blue socks

The above would make the text "My name is Imran" in the Pencil Font with a point size of 14 in maroon, and then the text "I wear blue socks" and beyond would be in Arial, in 12 point font in black. Get it?

Other Text Features

Bold - to start it use:   <b>
To end it use:   </b>

Italic - to start it use:   <i>
To end it use:   </i>

Underline - to start it use:   <u>
To end it use:   </u>

For example, if I want Imran is Cool to be in bold in my profile, I'd do this:

 <b> Imran is cool </b>

----

Text Justification

If you want your text centered, or on either side of your profile, use the following tags:

For normal text that starts on the left side, (this is the default setting) use:

< p . align=left>

For a right justification, where text is positioned to the right side, use:

< p . align=right>

For centered text, use

< p . align=center>

As always, you can mix these tags for multi-aligned text. For example, if one field was centered and you wanted the next field to be right justified, you would start the first field with the centered tag, and then put the right justify tag in the beginning of the next field.

-----

Links

Use the following HTML tag to create a link. I'll give an example that could be used to link to my personal web page, which is http://www.isaleh.com:

< a . href="http://www.isaleh.com">Imran's Web Page< /a .>

Replace the "http://www.isaleh.com" with your website address, and the Imran's Web Page with the name of your web site.  The above tag would come at as:

Imran's Web Page

Note: You may need to reinsert the font tag to get the text color back to the original color after you insert this HTML code.

More Cool Stuff With Links

Send me an IM link

If you want a link in your profile so that someone can click on it to IM you, check this code out...

Copy and paste this code into your AOL profile.

< a . href="aol://9293:imransaleh">Send Me an IM!< /a .>

Now replace imransaleh with your screen name.  You can also change the Send Me an IM! part to whatever you want the link to display.

Send me an e-mail link

On the same note, if you want a link to allow someone to send you an e-mail, look at this.

Copy and paste this code into your profile.

< a . href="mailto:imransaleh">Send Me an E-mail!< /a .>

Again, replace imransaleh with your screenname, and you can change the Send Me an E-mail! part to whatever you want.

-----

OK! We are done with the HTML! Now you can fill in the rest of your profile just like you normally would and it will look all cool! Even though there is all this Html in the Your name line, you can still type in there, just make sure it is in the right place relative to the tags, as in, keep the text you want after the HTML tags.

Now You Are Finally Set!
